ACTIVITIES OF SALAR JUNG MUSEUM FOR - MAY 2009

I. Educational Activities:

Temporary Exhibition

(i) A special exhibition on “300 years of Gurta Gaddi of Sri Guru Granth Sahibji” was organized by the Salar Jung Museum with the collaboration of Sikh Heritage Foundation Hyderabad Deccan commenced on 26th April, 2009 and was extended till 15th May, 2009.

(ii) On the occasion of Buddha Jayanti, the Museum has organized a special photo exhibition on “Birth Enlightement and Mahaparinirvana of the Lord Buddha as seen through Buddhist Sculptural Art” on 9th May, 2009. Dr. V.V. Krishna Sastri, Former Director, Dept. of Archaeology and Museums, Govt. of A.P. inaugurated the special exhibition.

Around 40 photographs were displayed in the exhibition narrating the important events in the life of Lord Buddha such as Birth, Renunciation, Enlightenment, Parinirvana etc.











II. Special Lecture

(a) A special lecture on “Conservation of Islamic Miniature Paintings at V&A” was arranged by Salar Jung Museum on 5th May, 2009. Mr. Mike Wheeler, Conservator, Victoria and Albert Museum, London delivered Special lecture.







(b) A special lecture on “From Precious Stones to Serpent’s Bones: Indian Jewellery in the collection of London’s Victoria and Albert Museum” was arranged by Salar Jung Museum on 6th May, 2009. Mr. Nick Bernard, Curator South Asian Art delivered the Special lecture.









(c) A special lecture on “The Role of Andhra Buddhism in developing the Buddhist Architecture – A Case Study” with slides was arranged by the Historical Society of Hyderabad and Salar Jung Museum jointly on 9th May, 2009. Sri. Babji Rao, Asst. Archaeologist, ASI, Hyderabad Circle delivered the Special lecture.







(d) The Salar Jung Museum celebrated “International Museum Day” on 18th May, 2009. On this occasion, a special lecture was delivered by Mrs. Chandana Khan, IAS, Principal Secretary to Govt. of A.P. on “Aspects of Indian Tourism”.









III. Other Activities

Summer Art Camp:

As a part of Educational and Cultural activities, this year also Museum has organized “Summer Art Camp - 2009” during 11th – 25th May, 2009 for Children in the age group of 8 to 15 years. There was good response from the children for Summer Art Camp this year as well. The participants were divided into two groups as Seniors and Juniors. The Summer Art Camp was commenced with 70 students in Senior group and 134 students in Junior group.



The children were trained in the subjects like Paintings, Glass embossing, Origami, basic lessons on Art of Living, Fabric painting, Architecture, Interior designing etc. During the camp, entertainment and educative programmes like film shows, different types of puppet shows and slide presentations on Cultural Heritage of India were screened for the benefit of children.

Salar Jung Death Anniversary:

The Museum observed the Death Anniversary of Nawab Mir Yousuf Ali Khan, Salar Jung III, the founder of the Museum on 26th May, 2009. The Officers and Staff assembled at Daira and paid homage.
